Guidelines for Writing a Code of Conduct

Getting Started

Introduce the idea of a code of conduct in a general meeting of your unit, arguing for it as a way of ensuring everyone knows the rules, particularly as a way of bringing new employees up to speed quickly.

Elect a committee unless the unit is small enough for everyone to participate (ten is roughly the upper limit).

Meet to review examples of codes you have downloaded from the Web sites cited in the text. Remember, the code of conduct will constitute the unit’s rules and regulations, so its prohibitions must be very specific to what happens, or might happen, in the unit and its requirements must be relevant to the tasks performed in the unit. Requiring employees to respect the flag and be loyal to the government isn’t appropriate unless it is necessary for the unit’s work.
